Dave Engle (OF/C) - June 29, 2011 - Response time: 14 days
Teams: Twins, Tigers, Expos, Brewers
As a minor leaguer Mr. Engle won the International League batting title in 1980. He was an All-Star in 1984 with the Twins. He is the brother of former Twins teammate Tom Brunansky (April 11, 2011). I thank him very much for signing.
Pat Perry (P) - June 29, 2011 - Response time: 28 days
Teams: Cardinals, Reds, Cubs, Dodgers
Unfortunately I don't have much information on Mr. Perry, but I thank him very much for signing.
Ken Phelps (DH/1B) - June 29, 2011 - Response time: 7 days
Teams: Royals, Expos, Mariners, Yankees, A's, Indians
Okay. I have to say this. I feel bad for Mr. Phelps because that is just the worst baseball card for a hitter I have ever seen. It looks like he's chopping wood, or trying to protect himself from small ninja's or something. It certainly doesn't look like he's hitting. The person from Topps who should thought this was a good idea should be cup-checked severely. Moving on though, Mr. Phelps had a decade long career in which he won the 1989 World Series with the A's. He is famous for two things in particular though. He was party to one of the worst trades in recent memory when he was sent to the Yankees in exchange for young slugger Jay Buhner. This was parodied on Seinfeld. Mr. Phelps's final home run was also his most notable. It came on April 20, 1990 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth against the Mariners (Phelps was playing for Oakland). Phelps was called out of the dugout to pinch hit against Brian Holman, who had retired the first 26 batters in succession. Phelps homered to ruin a perfect game. Years later, Phelps said he wanted to hit it out because he did not want to watch himself on ESPN's SportsCenter all season making the out to complete Holman's perfect game..
Joe Sambito (P) - June 29, 2011 - Response time: 6 days
Teams: Astros, Mets, Red Sox
Mr. Sambito's career was divided into two parts. Before his Tommy John's surgery he was one of the dominant closers in the National League and made the All-Star team in 1979. After the surgery he struggled to make a comeback but eventually caught on in Boston where he was able to put it back together long enough to help Boston make the 1986 World Series, but owing to his lack of first base skills, wasn't in the right place to help them win it. I thank him very much for signing and I'd like to say hello to Brianna and Ms. C., as well as Wes.
